AN EVENING TO CELEBRATE NORTHLAND BUSINESS
The 47th Annual Northland Business Excellence Awards presentation and celebration evening took place at McKay Stadium in Whangarei on Friday, 1 November 2024.
Three hundred people attended the black-tie event, which brought together over 70 business awards entrants, sponsors, judges, and key stakeholders from across Taitokerau to celebrate and honour the outstanding achievements of local businesses and individuals.
Participants from across the region submitted entries in five general business categories, ranging from emerging to large business, eight specialist categories, and three nomination categories. The winners of each business category then competed for the prestigious Northpower and Top Energy Northland Business Excellence Supreme Award.

Chamber board president Tim Robinson was delighted to see the Davies-Colley’s inducted into the Hall of Fame for their contributions over three decades to the economic development of the region.

The judges wanted to highlight Turning Point Coffee’s commitment to their wholesale clients, advising and empowering them to be the best they can be. This has led to a positive impact on the community they serve. Stu and Gemma, the leaders of Turning Point Coffee, exemplify quality and craftsmanship in roasting and customer service, while also upholding ethical standards in sustainability. Another key area noted by the judges is the high standards adhered to in their processes.
With Stu soon becoming the only Q Grade Coffee Instructor in New Zealand, their diligence has paid off, leading to steady and consistent growth over the past four years. The judges are excited to see Turning Point Coffee’s continued success in the future.

Personal harm to Security staff is a major risk in the industry. A few initiatives that impressed the ACC judges were the focused recruitment goals, a culture of open communication, mobile and radio connectivity, ongoing career development, body cameras, de-escalation training and ballistic vests provided that were above industry standards.
Owner JP Dignon has been in the industry and region going on 20 years and is part of the NZ Security Association and motivated to lift service standards in the industry. NDS standard setting approach to business was evident in the PP gear staff wore and feedback provided to ACC judge’s from NDS Security staff while on the beat in Whangarei central.
NDS is committed to providing to both private and the public sector in Northland a quality service. In a price competitive industry, NDS focus is on quality service, wellbeing and safety of its people. ACC would like to congratulate NDS on being this year’s 2024 ACC Workplace Safety Winner.

KM2 have created a product that has the potential to stop a large number of scams if adopted in Aotearoa. The business vision is for New Zealand to become a leader in fraud detection. The intention is to target high risk scams that are estimated to cost between $300m and $2B per annum to individuals, families and banks.
The judges were impressed with the research and mahi that has gone into validating and developing this product. They considered this an important system that could reduce harm from scammers to people and families in Aotearoa.

Turning Point Coffee are the 2024 winners of the NRC Excellence in Sustainability and Climate Action Award. They challenge the status quo and exemplify innovation in sustainable practices, especially regarding packaging, embracing energy-efficient solutions, and on-site solar electricity generation.
They actively participate in community sustainability projects, including helping to develop the coffee industry here in Taitokerau. Their greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies include solar energy utilisation, low-emissions transport, water collection systems, and optimised roasting schedules.
Turning Point Coffee not only delivers exceptional, sustainably sourced coffee but also actively fosters community engagement and supports local economies. By doing so, they demonstrate their social responsibility and commitment to a sustainable future.

She runs a Micro business with a focus on empowering women through the art of photography. Kirsty Joy also produces the ‘This is Me’ Magazine, capturing body positive images and inspiring stories of Northland women. Proceeds from this magazine go towards Women’s Refuge.
Kirsty Joy is a multi-Award winning photographer, a New Zealand Masters Track and Field Champion, and has worked through her own physical and mental struggles all the while running a successful business with a focus on uplifting other women. Rozlyn Fisher’s journey as a trainee line mechanic at Northpower is a testament to her resilience, as a young mother balancing a demanding career with raising her children.
Joining the Trade Cadet intake in April 2023 and attending five-day block courses in Auckland required her to spend time away from her tamariki, which was emotionally and logistically tough. As well as overcoming the physical demands of the job, Rozlyn has proven herself as a leader, proactive learner, problem solver and an asset to multiple teams within the business. Her ambition and commitment to providing a better future for her family has driven her to succeed. Northpower’s unwavering support has been instrumental in her growth, offering her the opportunity and flexibility she needed to thrive in both her career and her role as a mother. Through determination, Rozlyn is on track to becoming a qualified line mechanic, securing a stable future for her whānau.

Celebrating Over 30 Years of Excellence: Clare and Tony Davies-Colley
For over three decades, Clare and Tony Davies-Colley have been a quiet yet formidable force behind some of Northland’s largest business innovation and growth projects. Their journey is a testament to dedication, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to community development and growth.
Tony Davies-Colley began his career with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from Massey University. His early ventures in farming and forestry led to the establishment of TDC Sawmills, a successful enterprise he managed until its sale in 2006.
Clare Davies-Colley, is a distinguished Fellow Chartered Accountant, graduated from Victoria University of Wellington with a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration. Her early career spanned commercial accounting and corporate finance, culminating in a 12-year tenure co-owning and managing TDC Sawmills alongside Tony. TDC Sawmills was a Northland Chamber of Commerce New Business and Overall Business winner in 1997.
Their extensive experience spans sawmilling, farming, engineering, marine, and property development. Key achievements include establishing a number of businesses such as start-up Tui Technology, and the BDX Group where they still serve as non-executive directors.
In 2021, they launched the DC Group, a Northland-based asset management company providing services for a portfolio of assets primarily located in the Northland region. This includes commercial investments, residential developments like the Port Nikau Masterplan and Kotātā Heights subdivision and projects in the marine sector which include managing the Port Nikau wharf and marine facilities supporting a range of vessels and marine businesses. They also maintain an ongoing involvement in the forestry sector.
Tony has served terms on the Northland Regional Council and Northpower Trust, while Clare has served in a range of community positions including stints with the Institute of Directors Northland, NorthTec, various school boards and has been a Judge for the Business Excellence Awards. Clare served as Chair of Bike Northland which was instrumental in establishing the Pohe Island Bike Park.
Clare and Tony are dedicated to investing in Northland, their family-owned business reflects their passion for Northland’s natural beauty, community, and lifestyle. This passion is the cornerstone of their decision-making, aiming to create spaces where people love to live, work, and play.
