Jason Povey
A love of Bauhaus and a connection with Maori culture influenced the design of the Northland Business Awards trophies this year. Coining the term ‘Māohaus’, a fusion of Māori and Bauhaus design, Jase found inspiration in his own Maori heritage and the clean geometric shapes of Modernism. Koru shapes, colour, layers, subtraction and geometry, link the trophies to the environment, the land and the people.
Bio
Jason Povey is a designer and artist working in Northland, Aotearoa. Calling himself a graphic creator, his designs often incorporate a love of Pop Culture, an affinity for nature and a sardonic sense of humour. Jase works in both 2D and 3D formats, ranging from posters to New Zealand-themed laser-cut products. Based on Whakairo principles, Jason’s 3D works use depth, shadow, contrast, pattern and layers to convey the narrative.
He is currently involved in the outdoor sculpture exhibition at the Hundertwasser Art Centre, exhibiting his steel relief sculpture ‘Pop Puriri Moth’, the first in a series of three, inspired by native New Zealand insects. His latest exhibition is a collaboration with artist Lenny Murupaenga in an exhibition titled ‘The Prodigal Sons’ at Hangar Gallery until October 12.
